Access to the island is by frequent Calmac ferry from Largs. 10-minute crossing. No booking required. Bikes and rollerskis go free. Car park 200 metres north of the ferry slipway. OS 1:50000 Map 63, grid reference NS 201595.
16 km, nearly flat.
Tarmac public road. Smooth on the east side of the island, but a bit rough on the west.
Narrow public A-road. Probably best to avoid during the tourist season (early April to early October). Quiet outwith these times, but beware convoys following the arrival of the ferry. Take care through the small town of Millport.
Cafes in Millport and at Fintray Bay. Bus shelter at Cumbrae Slip.
Breezy coastal location with great views across the Firth of Clyde, to Arran and Bute. Interesting geological features: Lion Rock, and Crocodile Rock (both volcanic dykes) and Indian Rock (former cliff-line above raised beach). Good for bird life.
